How a Love of Bowling, a College Roommate, and a Familiar Face Helped Shape a Career
Jason Moehlman went to Olivet College (now The University of Olivet) with a bowling scholarship and an interest in business. He had helped start the bowling team at Algonac High School and would help do the same at Olivet. His next step on the lanes was clear.
His career path? That took a little encouragement from the person sharing his room.
“My roommate was actually in insurance,” Jason recalls. “He kept boasting about how great a program Olivet had, how good the job placement was, and what a stable career it is.”
Jason decided to give the program a closer look. What began as a roommate’s recommendation would soon lead to a degree, a profession, and another college connection that helped bring him eventually to Gompers, Cornish & Barr.
A Connection That Came Full Circle
At Olivet, Jason found professors who made the subject engaging and gave him a strong foundation in risk and insurance knowledge. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Insurance and Risk Management and began working in Personal Lines at a local agency here in southeastern Michigan.
He also knew a fellow Olivet student who would become a familiar face at GCB: Frank Mercurio. Jason graduated a year behind Frank, and the two stayed connected as their insurance careers took shape.
“Frank reached out to me a couple of times here and there, just asking how I was doing or if I was interested in pursuing other opportunities,” Jason recalls.
Eventually, the timing was right. So, this time, Jason had a question for Frank: Was GCB still hiring?
An interview followed, and Jason joined the agency in 2023. Three years later, he describes the move as a great transition…and one that gave him a clearer focus on serving Personal Lines clients.
Finding His Place in Personal Lines
Jason initially considered a path toward becoming a producer, like Frank. As he settled in, however, he found that account management offered the combination he wanted: a stable career and the opportunity to help people directly.
The appeal goes well beyond the day-to-day tasks on his plate. Jason enjoys bringing his knowledge to a conversation, making coverage recommendations, and earning a client’s trust.
“I really enjoy being able to help someone,” he says. “When they trust me and my recommendations, it makes me feel good that I can bring my knowledge to the table for the benefit of a client.”
For Jason, those relationships are the most rewarding part of the work. He wants clients to know they have someone to turn to when a question comes up or something goes wrong.
“They know I’m their guy and that I’m going to be able to help them out.”
A Call He Won’t Forget
One of those moments arrived on the day of GCB’s Christmas party last year. A client called Jason to report a house fire. The home was still burning. Jason helped the client get the claim started. It was a difficult conversation, and one he would remember long after that day.
But it was a later call that brought home the value of the work he and the agency had done. The client reached out to thank Jason and GCB for making sure the home was properly covered. At the time of his interview, Jason understood that the rebuilding process was still underway, and the client remained grateful.
“That was something that really pulled on my heartstrings a little bit,” he says.
Asked what makes him respond so strongly to someone else’s need, Jason gives a simple answer: “I’ve just always been someone who’s here to help other people. If anything I can do is going to help someone out, I’m going to do it.”
A Team That Has His Back
Jason’s introduction to GCB came with Frank’s perspective on the agency. During his interview, he began to see that same culture for himself. He sensed a family-oriented workplace. His experience since joining has reinforced that first impression.
“The staff and our owners really take care of us,” Jason says. “They treat us like family, and they always have our backs.”
That support matters to someone whose own approach centers on being available for others. At GCB, Jason has found colleagues and leaders who extend that same care to the people working alongside them.
Personal Lines
Away from the office, Jason and his wife, Amanda, live in Warren with Toby, their Golden Retriever/Labrador mix.
“He’s cute, and he knows it,” Jason says.
Married for just over three years, Jason and Amanda initially lived in a roughly 600-square-foot mother-in-law suite on her father’s property. Moving into their new condo with a basement felt like quite an upgrade. “Wow, did that feel like a mansion to us,” he jokes.
Bowling remains an important part of Jason’s story. A multiple sclerosis diagnosis interrupted his first year at Olivet and required medical leave. He returned the following year and continued bowling through college, then competed in a league after graduation.
College also brought a memorable insurance-program trip to London, Paris, and Dublin. Jason recently shared this about his experience:
During college, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to London, Paris, and Dublin as part of my Insurance & Risk Management degree. The trip offered a unique blend of professional insight and unforgettable experiences. We visited iconic landmarks in the insurance industry, including Lloyd’s of London, while also exploring places I had only dreamed of seeing. From visiting Oxford University and standing outside the Louvre to taking in the breathtaking views from the top of the Eiffel Tower (pictures truly don’t do it justice!) and seeing the incredible ancient stone formations at Stonehenge, every stop offered something memorable.
One of my favorite experiences, however, was getting an inside tour of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin—a visit that may have sparked my appreciation for a good beer! It was an unforgettable trip that combined education, culture, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences that I’ll always cherish.
These days, Jason enjoys hunting for garage-sale finds and reselling items, including golf clubs. He likes the search…and a hobby that can pay for itself.
He’s also beginning to take up golf. “Being an insurance agent, I think that might have been in the contract I signed,” he quips.
From a roommate’s encouragement to Frank’s check-ins, Jason’s career has been shaped by people willing to help him find his next opportunity. Today, he brings that same willingness to his clients, with Team GCB behind him.
It seems that the power of positivity has a way of coming full circle.
